Keeping it Fresh: How We Get Green Beans from Indonesian Farms to Australian Roasters

The biggest enemy of a coffee roaster is time. You can have the best beans in the world, but if they sit in a humid shipping container for too long or stay in a warehouse for a year, the quality dies. The vibrant acidity disappears, and you’re left with "baggy" tasting coffee.

When I started Wibowo Coffee, I knew that our logistics had to be as good as our beans. Here is how we manage the supply chain to keep things fresh for the Australian market.

1. Small Batches, More Often

Many large importers bring in massive amounts of coffee once a year and store it in big warehouses. By the time you buy it, those beans might be 8 or 10 months old.

We do things differently. We prefer to bring in smaller, more frequent shipments. This is harder for us to manage, but it means the coffee you get in Adelaide or Sydney is much closer to the harvest date. Freshness in green beans leads to better stability when you roast.

2. We Handle the Boring Stuff

Importing coffee from Indonesia to Australia involves a lot of paperwork—Biosecurity (DAFF), customs, and shipping schedules. For a small roaster, trying to import directly is a headache that takes time away from roasting.

We take that headache away. Because I have connections in both Indonesia and Australia, we handle everything from the farm gate to the warehouse door. You get the benefit of "Direct Trade" prices and transparency without the logistics nightmare.

3. Climate-Controlled Thinking

Indonesia is hot and humid; Adelaide is dry and can get very hot. That change in climate can ruin coffee if it's not packed correctly. We ensure our specialty lots are packed in GrainPro or similar moisture-barrier bags. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a coffee that scores 84 points and one that drops to 80 during the voyage.

4. Local Support in Adelaide

Being based in Adelaide means we are local. You don’t have to wait days for a response from an overseas office or weeks for a shipment from interstate. If you need a few bags for an emergency roast or want to cup some samples, we are right here. We believe in building a community where the importer and the roaster actually know each other's names.
